Power Integrations is one of the primary suppliers of GaN based power ICs, specialising in very highly integrated solutions. It has announced the expansion of its InnoSwitch4-CZ family to meet the latest USB PD 3.1 specification, allowing adapters to reach power ratings up to 220W.
So far, highly integrated solutions have been used in designs of lower power solutions (65W and below) in most use cases. This announcement is likely to accelerate the transition to higher power designs, made possible by the higher efficiencies achievable by GaN based solutions.
