Sony and Honda’s “Afeela” car showcases automotive’s high-tech future

This release highlights several high-level trends in automotive. Traditional car makers are coming up against more competition from consumer electronics brands. The smart ones will seek partnerships to remain relevant and to help them catapult ahead of the competition. These partnerships will involve multiple different types of company car OEMs, consumer electronics brands and semiconductor vendors all need to be involved as vehicles transition to the next phase of life.

UI is going to become increasingly important as we move towards more autonomous vehicles, they become mobile entertainment pods. This means innovation in audio, video, touch, haptics, gestures, etc. For companies like Sony, this enables them to showcase technologies such as “360 Reality Audio” and PlayStation integration in the car. They also need a partner that can deliver the UI hardware and software needed, this is where Qualcomm is well positioned to enable the vision that Honda and Sony.
