A new Ring smart doorbell has been introduced, the Battery Doorbell Pro. Whilst the design is pretty much the same (if it ain’t broke don’t fix it?), there are several new features.
What’s new? (main technology upgrades)
- Radar
- Improved noise cancellation
- Dual-band Wi-Fi
- Upgraded image sensor Color night vision
Radar enables more precise presence detection and less false positive results than the infrared technology previously used. It also enables 3D motion detection and an aerial view it calls Bird’s Eye View. Another interesting addition is the Bird’s Eye Zones, where a user can now create a zone in an aerial view, rather than the traditional way of creating zones based on the front facing camera view.
Active+ is an upgraded audio feature with improved noise cancellation. The details are pretty patchy right now, but we are assuming new algorithms and updated microphones, maybe additional microphones are likely. This isn’t the first product to have this.
Dual-band Wi-Fi adds the 5GHz band to the 2.4GHz band used previously (“802.11 b/g/n/ax wifi connection @ 2.4GHz & 5GHz”), which will enable faster video streaming to the mobile app.
An upgraded image sensor delivers more clarity (“1536p HD+ Video”) and the ability to create color video, even in very low light (it calls this feature Low-Light Sight). Together with “Zonal Infrared LEDs” it can also reduce under/over exposure of the image. It also enables “expanded Head-to-Toe field of view so you can see more of who’s there”.
It also has a removeable battery pack which should make charging a lot easier.
Some of these features have been used on other models of Ring doorbells such as the Wired Doorbell Pro but it is the first time that they have been pulled together in a battery powered doorbell.
