In 2019, Sonos acquired Snips, a company focusing on the development of embedded voice assistants based in France. Today, one of the reasons for the acquisition has been realised with Sonos announcing their own embedded voice control for all new and old voice compatible devices via a simple update.
One of the key focuses that Sonos seems to be pushing is voice control combined with improved privacy. The company states that the cloud is not used and all processing is done locally, improving processing time and efficiency. This makes sense if the company is wanting to use the technology as a way to control speakers within its own ecosystem. If the company wishes to rival Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri, then they will need to consider collecting data for training purposes as most alternative voice assistants and market leaders have proven that massive datasets are an essential part of creating an efficient assistant.
