Transphorm and Weltrend Semiconductor Partner to Release Integrated GaN System-in-Package

Transphorm has partnered with Weltrend to release a GaN based system in package (SiP), the WT7162RHUG24A. This SiP is designed for use in 45 to 100 watt USB-C PD power adapters charging smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other smart devices.

This SiP is another step forward for Transphorm who so far have been focussed on discrete GaN FETs rather than ICs. Some of the biggest players in the market for GaN components for power adapters are GaN IC suppliers such as Navitas and Power Integrations. This SiP design will allow Transphorm to compete with them directly and may be evidence for a general trend toward more integrated solutions being preferred in the GaN power adapter market. SAR Insight & Consulting covers the GaN power adapter market as a part of it’s wider USB Power & Charging service, predicting that this type of USB-C power adapter will be one of the main driving forces behind the adoption of GaN technology in the power adapter market.
