AirFuel Alliance announces release of global At-A-Distance RF wireless charging standard

AirFuel have announced the release of a global standard for over the air (OTA) RF wireless power transfer. This technology enables the wireless transfer of energy at relatively large distances (a few centimetres up to several metres). As this technology is still in its infancy and is yet to see any widespread adoption, industry standardisation is an important step in bringing OTA power to mass markets.

SAR Insight & Consulting believes that standardisation will aid adoption of RF wireless power technologies, as the Qi standard has for inductive charging. However, many different companies are already competing to have their solution be the OTA wireless power standard. Whilst AirFuel develops its standard it is too soon to discount technology that may sit outside this from non-members such as OSSIA, Powercast, and GuRu. Including these in the AirFuel standard would definitely be a benefit to the industry as a whole.SAR covers OTA wireless power as a part of its wider Wireless Power and Charging Technologies service, alongside inductive and NFC wireless charging.
